USA Economics and Business Olympiad (USAEBO)

1) What is USAEBO?

• USAEBO stands for the USA Economics & Business Olympiad. The organizers emphasize that it is the official qualification pathway for American K–12 students to earn a spot on Team USA for the International Economics Olympiad (IEO).

• It is an individual competition consisting of two selection rounds, ultimately choosing 5 team members to represent the United States at the IEO.

2) What is Covered on the Exam?

According to the official syllabus, the exam covers three main areas:

• Microeconomics: Supply, demand, elasticity, and equilibrium; consumer choice; firm behavior; imperfect competition (e.g., monopolies, monopolistic competition); market failures and government intervention; labor markets; game theory, etc.

• Macroeconomics: Macroeconomic indicators; economic growth; labor markets; AD–AS model; IS–LM model; monetary and fiscal policy; economic fluctuations; international economics, etc.

• Business & Finance: Financial planning; banking systems; time value of money; savings and lending; investments, financial instruments, and risk management; insurance, etc.

• Intuitive Summary: The exam covers the core frameworks of AP Microeconomics + AP Macroeconomics, supplemented by foundational financial literacy and general business/finance concepts.

3) Competition Rules & Structure

Structure

• Two-Round System: Round 1 (Open to all eligible students) → Round 2 (By invitation/qualification from Round 1).

• Format: Individual competition.

Eligibility

• Round 1 Participation: Officially open to students of any nationality, provided they are under 20 years old on the opening day of that year’s international competition.

• Additional Criteria for Team USA: To be selected for the U.S. National Team, students must be U.S. Citizens, Green Card holders, or enrolled full-time in a U.S. middle or high school.

Format & Proctoring

• Both rounds are conducted digitally and require online proctoring utilizing specified technology (specific details released prior to the exam).

Anti-Cheating Policy & Penalties

• Zero Tolerance: Any student confirmed to have cheated will receive a permanent ban covering the current competition and all future editions.

• The official site also notes that if educational programs or institutions inquire about student standing, the organizers will truthfully disclose any cheating infractions or ban decisions. All final interpretations reside with the organizing committee.
